I remember coloring in this sketch ([link]) in 2009 but at that time I wasn't happy with the overall design. The lighting and shading was really bad.

Here is a better version I toned down the colors and went with style that look like a classic oil paint. I'm glad I managed to complete this because its one of my favorite :)

yeah this is just stunning the way you have done the light source is almost perfect and the way its reflect of the character you have really done well on i love that part of this piece. also the expression which you have done on the character is very well thought of brings the character out more. however my only improvement would be that the bottom left corner does seem very dark which if you was looking for realistic light sources wouldnt be as dark as it is but its still effect the way you have done it. all in i feel that this piece look way better than it did before :)

Hi! thanks for the feedback Jasmine, its finally good to have some constructive criticism. Normally my lighting is out of the ordinary I tend to exaggerate the shadows and textures in my paintings as well. Despite the little errors I am really glad you like it :)

The Mothers love for her Child is always universal - this is something I wanted to address. People may mistake her expression as being angry but she is not she is only expressing her concerns for the survival of the child because she is living in a time of turmoil and conflict. I wish I had the time to write a back-story to support the painting.

There's a reason why I left the bottom-left area dark its done just so that viewers attention will be on the Mother and the cocoon. I don't know if you had noticed but there's a life-cycle story in this painting you need to look carefully to see it :)

oh that explains the darkness then and yes i didnt think the expression was angry its alot more of a worried expression and its a beauitful painting and no i love the way you exaggerate the light source it gives the painting alot more feeling and realistic touch to it and and also complments which the mothers expression by the light source reflexing off it make her expression seem softer

Thanks a lot :) it took me a while to decide the best colors - after a little toggling in photoshop's (hue & saturation) the Sepia tone was perfect for this piece. I tend to over do lighting in paintings so I left that & just focused more on color and shading.

I have a lot of sketches sitting in my computer that's waiting to be colored whats its complete I'll keep you posted ;)
